RAY CHARLES: You Don't Know Me
Ray Charles Robinson (Ray Charles) was a singer, songwriter, musician and composer who pioneered the genre of soul music in the 1950's. His combining of rhythm and blues with gospel and blues gave him the nickname of "The High Priest of Soul." Influenced by Nat King Cole, he loved jazz and also admired musicians like Louie Armstrong. Later in the 1960's, he started singing country blues and had a number of crossover hits on the charts. Sinatra called him "the only true genius in show business." Rolling Stone ranked him number 10 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" and number 2 on their list of "100 Greatest Singers of All Time."
