That's Entertainment! Songs Introduced by Fred Astaire
Although Fred Astaire claimed that he couldn't sing, he was picked by some of the greatest songwriters of early films to introduce songs that became standards, still being sung today. Songs such as Cole Porter's "Night and Day", Irving Berlin's "Change Partners", Jerome Kearn and Dorothy Field's "the Way You Look Tonight" and George & Ira Gershwin's "Foggy Day", have all been sung in one of Fred Astaire's movies.
Irving Berlin and Jerome Kearn considered Astaire a greater interpreter of their songs while Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer admired his unique treatment of their work.
While this program focuses on the songs that Fred Astaire introduced in some of Hollywood's best musicals, Phil will discuss what part the songs played in each film and show some film clips of Astaire's smooth elegant dancing routines. Phil performs such songs as "I Won't Dance", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Cheek To Cheek" and many more.
